There’s a new kind of reality TV show just finished on Channel 5 that you might like to check out if you love nothing more than pulling on your custom designed triathlon wear and heading out on your bike.
It’s called Tour De Celeb and follows eight sporting and TV personalities as they ready themselves for the Etape du Tour. Who’s on it? Choreographer Loui Spence, reality stars Lucky Mecklenburgh and Hugo Taylor, Angellica Bell, Jodie Kidd, Darren Gough, Austin Healey and Amy Williams.
The team have been put through their paces by Dame Sarah Storey, sports scientist Asker Jeukendrup and ex-pro Rob Hayles so they’re physically able to take on the 122km Etape.
The final episode aired December 19th but if you’ve missed all the action, don’t worry – you can always watch it on catch-up since it’ll be on the Channel 5 site for a few weeks.
Interestingly, the series hasn’t been especially well received, with the Daily Telegraph saying that the only reason to watch it is for the comedy stylings of Louie Spence – “if Spence doesn’t make it to France, frankly there will be little point in tuning in” – although Cycling Weekly did note that “it’s actually quite nice to see these beginners gradually get bitten by the cycling bug, and platitudes soon give way to some genuine enthusiasm from most of the participants”.
We’d love to hear what you think about the show and whether you feel cycling was the right sport to pick for a reality TV series. Share your comments with us here.
